EN 1047 Fire Test

Fire test signThe EN 1047 fire test is a European standard that applies in all member states of the EU including the UK. It can also sometimes be referred to as the VDMA 24911.

During the test, safes are heated in a furnace to 945°C or 1049° C for one or two hours respectively, depending on the rating being sought. Once the time has elapsed, the furnace is extinguished and the safe is left to cool. Safes often fail during this cooling period as they continue to absorb ambient heat.

Certain types of safe will be subjected to a fire and drop test. For this test, a second sample safe is rapidly heated for between 20 and 30 minutes, before being removed from the furnace. It is then hoisted to a height of 9.1 metres and dropped onto a bed of rubble. This simulates a building collapse. The safe is then returned to the furnace for 22 and half minutes or 45 minutes (for safes rated 60 minutes and 120 minutes respectively), before being left to cool. Should it rupture at any point, it fails the test.

For products designed to protect paper, the internal temperature of the safe cannot rise above 170° C during either of these tests. Safes that meet this requirement will be designated as S 60 P or S 120 P (for 60 minutes and 120 minutes protection respectively).

For products designed to protect digital media such as USB dongles, etc., the temperature cannot rise above 70°C, while humidity may not exceed 85%. Safes that meet this requirement will be designated as S 60 D or S 120 D (for 60 minutes and 120 minutes protection respectively).

For products designed to protect sensitive data media such as floppy disks, the temperature may not exceed 50° C and the humidity levels must not exceed 85%. Safes that meet this requirement will be designated as S 60 DIS or S 120 DIS (for 60 minutes and 120 minutes protection respectively).

Diskette inserts designed to protect floppy disks or similar media are given a rating of DI 60 P/DIS or DI 120 P/DIS depending on how many minutes protection they give. Such products must be placed within a safe with an S 60 P or S 120 P rating.
