Safes are built to last. Durable products, they should last a lifetime if properly maintained and cared for. As you might expect, there is a strong market for second hand safes and you could well save a lot of money by purchasing a used safe instead of a brand new one.
However, there are certain things you need to consider to ensure your second hand safe provides the protection you require. Some questions you might want to ask include:
Has it been maintained well?
- Has it been subjected to a fire previously?
- Are all its fittings present and in good working order?
- Does the locking mechanism operate smoothly and easily?
- Are there any signs of damage, impact or mistreatment?
- Has it been repaired, modified or damaged?
Safes which have previously been exposed to high temperatures, or which have suffered some kind of impact or drop (e.g. down a stairs, an attempt to break it open) may provide a reduced amount of protection in the event of a fire. Some may not provide any protection at all, meaning you’ll have paid out good money for nothing. Worst of all, you won’t discover the problem until it’s much too late and the safe’s contents have been lost.
If you decide to purchase a second hand safe, be sure to buy from a reputable dealer.
